You’ll want to update some apps on your new iPhone if you were given it as a gift for Christmas. We have some great suggestions. There are great apps you can download that will replace the default apps Apple ships.
We have compiled a list of our top-rated apps and games. Our app picks are for iPhones, Android phones, and Windows PCs. We also have M1-equipped Macs. You can also see our top gaming PCs: the PS5, Xbox One, Series X / S, and Nintendo Switch. Our favorite streaming shows include Hulu, ESPN Plus, and Netflix. We also have great sci-fi books and new podcasts. (Note: Pricing was correct at the time of publication, but could change. )
iOS 14 made it easier for you to personalize the look of your iPhone. Apple introduced new widgets and simplified how you can set custom app icons. Widgetsmith is one of the most popular iPhone widgets. It allows users to add photos, text, and quotes. It’s easy to combine it with clever icon swaps (now more accessible in the most recent iOS update), and the right wallpaper and you have the personalized iPhone of your dreams.
Although it’s difficult to get to libraries, if you have a smartphone, you can access Libby which allows you to borrow audiobooks and ebooks from your local library free of charge right from your phone. The app is a great digital reader app, so you can read books without a Kindle.
TikTok rose to prominence in 2020 and has become one of the most popular social media networks. It offers everything you need, including internet memes, comedy sketches, and even a complete Ratatouille musical. It’s simply the best place to be on the internet today. You can watch almost unlimited content when you add an algorithm that shows you videos tailored to your interests almost like magic.
Twitter can be a terrible way to spend time, but if this is you, Tweetbot will make it much easier. Tweetbot displays the tweets of people you follow in the order they were tweeted. No ads, promoted tweets, or powerful mute filters are used to block unwanted noise and, thanks to Twitter’s unfriendly API updates, no notifications are sent to remind you to return to the app.
Manager for Paprika Recipes
The internet is the ultimate cookbook. It has all you need to make any dish, dessert, or drink. Paprika allows you to paste links to those recipes and pulls out all the important information (ingredients and directions, serving sizes, etc.) from the often endless stories and histories food blogs insist on sharing. You can then save the information in your digital cookbook so you can access it whenever you need it.
The new iPhones’ cameras are more powerful than ever, thanks in large part to the AI-powered algorithms that help you perfect your shots. Halide is an app that allows you to push the limits of the camera’s capabilities if you are more experienced with photography. You can also use the iPhone 12 Pro’s ProRAW format to take your photography to the next level. It’s an annual subscription that costs $199, but it’s well worth it if you are passionate about iPhone photography.
Photography is only one part of the equation. Darkroom is a great app that allows you to edit multiple photos at once. It’s completely free. However, you can also subscribe to additional features.
Security time! Two-factor authentication is a great way to secure your internet accounts. If you are, Authy is the app that you will use to generate authentication codes. Do you not have two-factor authentication? Set it up now! Authy is a better option than Google Authenticator for storing and tracking all the authentication codes.
Lastpass / 1Password
You should consider using a password manager to protect your internet security. LastPass and 1Password, which have different costs and pros, are the best options. It’s a great time to add more security to your phone.
Apple’s default Mail app is just awful for email. The UI is cumbersome and Gmail support is not sufficient to warrant installing another email app. Outlook for iOS remains one of the best options. It has useful features, a fast UI, and Microsoft support. This means that it will be around for many years. You can even make it the default app with iOS 14.
Truth be told, Apple Maps isn’t terrible these days. It doesn’t matter. You’re likely to move it to a folder, and then use Google Maps to find your destination. Sometimes you can’t beat the original.
Splitting the internet bill with your roommates, or paying a tab at a local bar (when they are open again), each person must pay another at some point. Venmo makes it easy, simple, and secure. It also works with things other than iPhones.
Apple Photos is your default photo app. You won’t be able to replace it. All the photos you take are stored there automatically. Google Photos will stop offering unlimited storage beginning June 1, 2021. This means that it won’t be able to back up all of your photos and videos. It will still offer 15GB storage, plus any photos and videos that you have already uploaded. This is a lot more than Apple’s 5GB default iCloud storage. It’s far better than no backup. You don’t want to take any chance with your most treasured photos.
Fantastical is a powerful alternative to Apple’s default Calendar. It can be used for simple tasks. Fantastical is now free, with additional features available for a subscription. Fantastical offers a far better UI on your phone screen than Apple’s. Fantastical also has excellent contextual cues that allow you to add details such as dates and locations automatically when you create new events. The widget is also far more useful than the default calendar app, and it’s particularly useful for iOS 14.
Otter.ai is a niche app, but it’s worth considering if you have a lot to record on your iPhone. Otter.ai is an AI-powered voice recorder app that records your conversations and saves them in the cloud for you to access anywhere. Although the free version has some limitations, you can only record 40 minutes at once and 600 minutes per month, it is still an extremely useful tool.
